Mussolini demolished 40 percent of ancient Rome. Stalin massacred his own countrymen. Hitler, well we all know what Hitler did. However, the atrocities that lie at the depths of the human heart are no match for the Care Bears, who continue to spread joy and affection by warding off the Care Bear villains, who personify the evil forces of human nature.
After more then 20 years and three feature films, the Care Bears continue to battle their infamous foes in an attempt to prove that positivity and compassion will always prevail over pessimism.
Ten months after the Care Bears debuted in 1981, Professor Coldheart entered the scene as a villain capable of freezing people's emotions. Positive human attributes were stopped cold in a person's veins as they became lifeless zombies in a numb, emotionless society. The Care Bears, who live in the cloud castle Care-A-Lot, took it upon themselves to swoop down and unfreeze human emotion, allowing people to become loving individuals. In later episodes of the popular children's program, villains Beastly and Shrieky entered the plot.
In 1985, the Care Bears encountered a new villain. In their first feature film, aptly titled The Care Bears Movie, the Care Bears fought to save Nikolas, a young magician's apprentice who fell under the spell of an evil spirit residing in a book of magic. Power-hungry and full of contempt, Nikolas set out on a crusade to change the world one evil deed at a time. His selfishness and egoism, however, were reversed when the Care Bears attacked him with rainbow bursts of love in their infamous Care Bear's stare.
After seeing the error of his ways, Nikolas vowed a life of caring, compassion and love. The Care Bears, saving souls one misguided child at a time, moved on.
A year later, The Care Bears Movie II: A New Generation depicted the evil forces of Dark Heart, who preyed on insecure children at a summer camp. This time it was a girl named Christy who fell for the allure of power, gaining the respect of her camp nemeses by physically overpowering them and subjecting them to mortifying endeavors, like picking up garbage around the camp.
The shape-shifting Dark Heart lied, bribed and manipulated Christy into performing sadistic routines on her fellow campers. Once the camp misfit, Christy soon became the Camp Champ. However, she paid a high price for this title: her soul.
A good person at heart, Christy was easily persuaded to join the caring rank of bears. Dark Heart, however, was a different story. Bombarded by a physically-manifested stream of love, Dark Heart was only conquered by the Care Bears' and Care Cousins' arsenal of affection.
In their final cinematic feature, The Care Bears Adventures in Wonderland, the Care Bears battled the evil Wizard No Heart and his assistants Dim and Dumb. This 1987 film followed a similar Care Bear rubric, overcoming evil and saving the characters of Alice and Wonderland.
With two new feature films, Journey to Joke-A-Lot and Big Wish Movie, the Care Bears continue to fight the foes necessary to enlighten human civilization and guide children toward a life of, well, caring.
